Classroom Close-Up: Mr. Ureel, Hillside Middle School

For this Classroom Close-Up we were invited to Mark Ureel's Social Studies class at Hillside Middle School. The 7th graders were working on their River Valley Innovations projects, in which they are researching different innovations made during the ancient times.

Hi, I'm Mark Ureel and I teach 6th and 7th grade Social Studies here at Hillside. Welcome to my class. Today my students are working on their River Valley Innovations project in which they're going to look up different innovations or inventions made during the ancient times in river valley civilizations. Right now they're working on the research but eventually they are going to create a 3D model and then do a 2 to 5 minute speech. We had to choose inventions on what we wanted to do and I chose pyramids. We have to do this graphic organizer and we have to ask like at least five questions. So a couple of mine we're like when and where was it created, what effects did pyramids have on society or like how did they build the pyramids and stuff like that and we have to like do at least like one paragraph and explain kind of explain the question and we have to support that with our sources. I like it kind of like independent that way I can take a little bit more control of it and I feel I have a lot of fun like creating it especially with like the clay and decorating stuff.
