Northville CARES Creates Resource Hub for Northville Public Schools

Northville CARES for Youth exists to coordinate a community-driven approach to providing social, emotional, and mental health support to Northville youth. Northville CARES for Youth looks at this issue from a broad perspective to identify gaps, encourage efficiencies, and leverage resources on a community-wide level. Northville CARES for Youth does not implement direct programs and services but serves to promote collective action among community partners to support youth wellbeing. Here's an introduction to all of the partnerships and the resources they provide.

I'm Beth Santer and I'm the Executive Director of Special Services for Northville Public Schools and I also am the co-chair of Northville CARES with Amy Prevo who you're going to hear from later. So Northville CARES is a community council that partners Northville Public Schools with its community agencies. We know that schools can't do everything on their own, we know that we need to partner as a community because we know that we are stronger together and we also know that our community has many, has several agencies that are they are willing to help our kids. And now you're going to hear from our agencies that we work with. Hello my name is Chief Alan Maciag, I'm from the city of Northville Police Department. We are a member of Northville CARES. Northville CARES is extremely important especially for our young children today in Northville schools, children are faced with so many stressors today more than we've ever had when we were kids and it's important that, number one, we understand that and number two, as being part of Northville CARES and the police department that we take care of our children. Please know that our officers are all trained to deal with situations when our children may have the stressors or dealing with the stressors of today's day and age, not only are our officers trained to deal with that but we have a lot of resources that we can get them to as well. No children should be left by themselves to suffer alone, all of us should be working together to help them get through a time of crisis. Color My World is a suicide prevention club at Northville High School, what we believe is through proactive measures that we could really prevent teenage suicide within our community. So we have free services such as therapy dogs for students, we do gratitude notes, care packages, free hot chocolate drives, in fact we're also building a Zen room for students, its like a mental health suite resource library for students during the day, if they really need a break they could come down to the counselor's office and have those resources, have the counselors, and we really believe that we're trying to make Northville a more positive place in such a rigorous High School. Hello everyone, my name is Laura Reiners and I serve as the Community Relations Director at Growth Works. Growth Works is a human services non-profit and we've been serving Wayne County residents for over 50 years. Growth Works specializes in substance use treatment for kids and adults, we work with kids in the Juvenile Justice System, and we also provide a number of Family Services. We are so grateful to be a part of Northville CARES because that means we get to connect with the students and families here in Northville and help provide them with the services that they need most. So thank you so much and we are grateful to be apart of Northville CARES. Hegira Health is the largest Behavioral Health provider in Wayne County right now. We are what I would call a one-stop-shop. We have mental health services, substance abuse services, Residential Services, we preventive care, anything with mental health wellness or substance abuse for both children and adults. Hegira Health is your place to be. Hi, I'm Caryn Bartone, I'm the head of Youth Services here at the Northville District Library. We offer programs for kids and teens, educational ones and entertaining ones, we offer database access to help them with homework and so many other things. Come on in and see everything that we have to offer. I think it's important for us to be a part of Northville CARES so that we can help support and partner with other local organizations and that way we can spread awareness of what's going on in the community to everyone. Hi, I'm Leon Judd, Volunteer President of NAMI Metro for Oakland, Wayne, and Macomb counties. We're an all-volunteer grassroots organization, 501 c 3. We provide education support and advocacy for family members as well as individuals who are impacted in some way by a mental health condition. Being a part of Northville CARES is important and critical as the education that is needed as especially for young people is going to be what iradicates the stigma surrounding mental illness. So we're really looking forward to doing what it is that we can with Northville CARES to help educate the community. Hi my name is Steve Slayton, I'm the State Board President for NAMI Michigan. NAMI is the National Alliance on Mental Illness and it's the country's largest grassroots organization around mental health. We aim to provide educational resources to anyone who needs it for most of all of our services are free for whoever needs them and our main goal is to reduce and eliminate the stigma around mental illness which in effect will save many lives. We appreciate partners like Northville CARES because without them we would not have the reach to touch the communities we do. New Hope Center for Grief Support is a 501 3 C nonprofit located here in downtown Northville. We provide free grief support to those impacted by the death of a loved one. Our mission is to bring hope, healing, and new beginnings to children, families and adults impacted by the death of a loved one. We offer numerous ongoing support groups based on loss as well as programs, trainings, seminars, workshops to help better understand how to support those in grief as long as well as yourself. Northville Youth Network serves youth and families in the Northville Community by providing programs, activities, and one-on-one support to use in parents. All in an effort to help our kids to be the best they can be. We provide education awareness and prevention programs and activities, we'll have speakers come and talk or we have classes that parents can take, we have leadership development opportunities for our youth participating in our Youth Action Board and then we also provide school based partnership programs Camp Hillside, Camp Meads Mill, Peer to Peer at Meads Mill and the makers club at Hillside. And then on a micro level we work individually with youth and families that are experiencing some challenges whether that's mental health challenges or behavioral challenges at school or in the community. Hello my name is Tracey Stevenson and I'm the founder of NPAAS, Northville Parents of African American Students. The mission of NPAAS is to partner with Northville parents and the community and the CARES program to promote a diverse academic environment and to ensure that all students are successful. NPAAS is implementing solutions to help children compete globally. The mission of the PTA is to to make every child's potential a reality by engaging and empowering families and communities to advocate for all children. So what we offer is very different from building to building, but overall it is that sense of community and that connection between the school and the home. I'm Andrew Domzalski with the Northville Township Police Department. I'm the Community Service Officer here. Some of the things that we offer through the township is our co-response program with Hegira Health where we have an embedded social worker that will respond to any type of crisis calls or mental health calls we may have. Part of that service is follow-up and referrals and then we get the individuals the services that they need, so it's a great program that we have. The reason we're with the Northville CARES program is because we deeply care about our community and our students here within Northville Public Schools, so being committed to them and giving them what they need and deposit of resources regarding mental health and just safeguarding them is really important to us. We know that in the end no matter what role you serve, they're all our kids and we want to make sure that every one of our kids gets the support that they need.
