College Testing Roadmap
Freshman & Sophomore Year
The Foundation
- Focus: Maintain a strong GPA and focus on core classes (especially Algebra and Geometry).
- October (Sophomore): Take the PSAT 10. This is a "no-stakes" practice run to get used to the Digital SAT format and identify areas for improvement.
- Spring: If you are in advanced math, consider taking a practice ACT to see which test style you naturally prefer.
Junior Year
The "Main Event"
- October: Take the PSAT/NMSQT. This is the only year that PSAT scores qualify you for the National Merit Scholarship.
- Winter (Dec–Feb): Choose your "Primary" test (SAT or ACT). Begin targeted prep (1–2 hours a week) focusing on your weakest sections.
- March/April: This is usually the "First Attempt" window.
Note: Most Michigan public schools host a "School Day SAT" in April.
- May/June: Take a Second Attempt if needed. Many students see their highest score jump between their first and second try.
Senior Year
The Final Polish
-
August/September: If you aren't satisfied with your Junior year scores, this is your final window for most Early Action/Early Decision deadlines.
-
October/November: Final opportunity for scores to be sent to regular decision colleges.
-
December: By now, you should be focused entirely on applications and finish the testing process.

Pro-Tips for Northville Students
- Super-scoring: Many colleges take your best section scores from different test dates and combine them into a "Super-score." Don't be afraid to take the test twice!
- Fee Waivers: If you qualify for free or reduced lunch, you are likely eligible for fee waivers that cover the cost of the SAT and ACT. See your counselor for a code.
- Test-Optional: Always check your specific "Dream Schools." If your GPA is much stronger than your test scores, applying test-optional might be your best strategy.
